CDC, in partnership with CMS and FDA, supports the CLIA program and clinical laboratory quality.

Rapid Antigen Test
Highly accurate in detecting active Covid infection.
Antigen testing detects active Covid infection.  This test is performed on-site by swabbing the back of the nose.  Results are generally obtained in 15-20 minutes.  Positive results are considered accurate.  If one has been exposed or has symptoms of infection, it is recommended that a negative result should be followed by a molecular test (PCR test).

Rapid PCR Test
Most accurate in detecting active Covid infection.
Rapid PCR testing (also called a molecular test or NAAT - Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) is the most accurate in detecting active coronavirus infection. Â This test is performed on-site by swabbing the back of the nose. Â Results are generally obtained within 45-minutes.

PCR Lab Test
Most accurate 24-hour lab test for detecting Covid infection.
The lab-based test is the most accurate test on the market for detecting active Covid infection. A nasal swab sample will be collected and sent to a lab. The lab will extract genetic material from the sample using special chemicals, enzymes, and a PCR machine called a thermal cycler. After many cycles, millions of copies of a small portion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus’s genetic material become present. Finally, Scientists analyze the results to confirm the virus's presence. This test results within 12 to 24 hours.
